Why Do Friends Let Friends Embarrass Themselves On American Idol?Copyright © 2007-2009 Trent LampeAfter seeing some atrocious performances on American Idol, we are always left wondering whether we would ever let our own friends embarrass themselves on this show and in this manner. How is it that people allow their friends to be victims of American Idol? If a friend is clearly tone-deaf but wants to audition for American Idol, friends or family members should intervene and not let this non-talented pal audition for the show. It is just not right to allow them to go on TV and embarrass themselves by butchering a classic song. Just because friends are willingly to try out for the show, doesn't mean that you should let them do so. Many contestants audition for American Idol to pursue their dreams of becoming musicians. For most, it is a very realistic dream, while for others it is an impossible dream to achieve. They may simply try out so that they can get their few minutes of fame. Instead, they get a barrage of needlessly vicious and demeaning commentary from the Idol judges. Sure, no one made them go to the show, but the degrading nature of the early auditions is unpleasant for everyone involved. American Idol really has no redeeming social value, and is really one colossal human train wreck. It's grotesque and looks to gain from the poor misfortune of others. When friends let their friends go on Idol, they can guarantee that their dreadful moment on TV, with millions of viewers watching, will have most of the audience laughing. While watching a contestant make a complete fool of him or herself, most of us cannot help but squirm in our seats. We sit there and wonder whether these people really believed that they had enough talent to even give Idol a try. We would all hope that our friends would step in and not allow us to make such stupid and embarrassing decisions. The effects from that one appearance on Idol could last a lifetime, with the person never being able to shake off the label as the untalented fool who thought they had talent. The issue of mental soundness when it comes to some of the contestants is one that should really be explored. In each of the American Idol seasons, some of the really horrible contestants seemed completely unaware of how bad they really were. Most of us have no problems with the funny contestants who clearly know that they have no talent. William Hung for example had no illusions about his own lack of talent, but he enjoyed his karaoke. With those contestants, we laugh more with them, and not so much at them. But when a singer completely blows a song, and gets really upset at what the judges have to say, then all of a sudden the embarrassment factor seems to quadruple. We're teetering on cruel, abusive behavior-all in the name of ratings. Shameful. But the show's tryout episodes still continue to draw in a large number of viewers. People find them hilarious, laugh-out-loud, watching-someone-slip-on-a-banana-peel funny. Some of these contestants come in with sob stories; acting like the chance to be on American Idol is their one positive moment in life. And if they are really so delusional to think they're great singers, the judges will not bring them back to reality no matter how mean they are to them. Seriously, why were they there? And was this really supposed to be entertainment? After croaking out some horrible notes, most contestants receive the silent treatment from the judges, who stare at contestants to add to the embarrassment, making everyone uncomfortable. Unfortunately, for every outrageously absurd and funny singer, there are dozens more who apparently believe they are the best, when they clearly lack any talent at all. It is really difficult to decipher exactly what their intentions were. Do they really think they're good? Or are they just trying to get on television? And regardless, must they embarrass themselves in this manner? Then, after getting ridiculed by the judges, these same contestants turn around at blast the panel of judges for being too cruel. In all honesty, the untalented contestants are sometimes fun to watch, until they burst into tears, or stare back at the silent judges. All of the contestants should have known what they were getting into: If they stink, they're going to be ridiculed and humiliated by the judges and by the American audience. So, the contestants are either doing this for attention or because they think they could become the next American Idol. If their friends knew that they actually lacked singing talent and the ability to critically examine him or her self, then their friends should have broken the news to them gently so that the judges wouldn't get the chance to do so, harshly. There is nothing worse that seeing someone who really thinks they have what it takes to be the next American Idol, but are nowhere close in the talent department. About The Author:
