Heroes Host Camps - Grrrl Power AscendsCopyright © 2006-2008 Travel Alberta, All Rights ReservedWritten by: Travel Alberta You can play with the big boys when you learn how to jib your first rail or hit your first large jump or nail a cab 540 spin. Better yet, if you're a girl, you can play with the big girls and leave those boys on their own. And if you're a boy – hey, you up for the competition? There are killer camps coming to Alberta and full-on schools that will provide all ages and skill levels (and genders!) an opportunity to get better. Let's get this straight right out of the gate: Riding at a girls camp is different than at a guys camp. Lake Louise Gets MGT "A lot of girls are motivated by seeing a guy or a girl do a (rider) trick," says Joanna Majcherkiewicz, 27, of the MGT Snowboard Camp that's coming to Lake Louise Mountain Resort on April 1-2 and Canada Olympic Park in Calgary on Jan. 7-8. "So while the girl is motivated to, say, go off that cliff or go down that hard line or jump, they are more motivated when they see a girl do it, because she will think: 'Maybe I can do that'" says Majcherkiewicz, the MGT Camp Director and co-founder who is enthusiastically hands-on at the two-day ride camps. Majcherkiewicz co-founded MGT with Leanne Pelosi, 25, and they're both from Calgary, though they are also based in Whistler, B.C. Pelosi is the 2 x US OPEN Rail Jam winner and the Transworld Female Rider of the Year '05, aside from being a Camp Director. And Majcherkiewicz hosts the Ride Guide (a snowboard show in Canada on Global TV on Saturday afternoons), including event announcing. "We grew up in Calgary so it's like going back to our stomping grounds," says Majcherkiewicz. You can expect some surprises at the Alberta camps, along with some high-wattage star power. And you might even get the chance to become a star. "A lot of the high end athletes in magazines and videos are based on the West coast and we will bring these people to these camps, giving people who otherwise would not be able to shred with their heroes a chance," says Majcherkiewicz. "Girls who are really promising, we talk to sponsors about them. We know people in the snowboard industry so we can discuss with say, a boot company, and help to hook them up." But it's not just about shredding with the top girls in the industry. It's also about meeting new friends and developing new skills with coaches that are hands-on. "You could just come out and meet other girl riders and be in a great atmosphere," she says. "It is a unique camp; no other camp in North America operates like we do with our level of coaching and our itinerary." Why? "We have the best and most progressive riders, who are creatively involved in snowboarding videos and editorial, and we are well supported by the industry," says Majcherkiewicz. "Our coaches don't stand by the sidelines and just instruct or give verbal encouragement. They demonstrate the trick and then the camper does it. The coaches are actively riding with the campers all day." Missed anything? Here's a recap: MGT provides coaching in the slopestyle and halfpipe disciplines as well as freeriding. Campers are typically recreational snowboarders as well as athletes interested in pursuing snowboarding competitively or professionally. Female riders learn how to jib their first rail or hit their first large jump through to learning more complicated and progressive tricks, like a cab 540 spin or a spin onto a difficult rail. Most participants are between the ages of 14 and 28 with variation at either end. And, oh, here's a final tip for the guys: "If you're a guy, you can drive your girlfriend or wife there," says Majcherkiewicz. "Or you could come dressed in drag, I guess." Otherwise, The Lake Louise Ski and Snowboard School offers a wide range of lessons, so it's worth checking out what might best suit you.
